The Unit Confusion That Trips Everyone Up
Water utilities bill in units almost nobody uses in daily life, and the two most common ones look nearly identical on paper.
- CCF (or HCF) means one hundred cubic feet. One CCF is about 748 gallons. The "C" is from the Latin centum.
- CF means a single cubic foot — about 7.48 gallons.
They differ by a factor of 100, so mixing them up turns a normal bill into an apparent catastrophe or vice versa. The quick sanity check: a typical household lands somewhere between 3 and 15 CCF a month, or between 300 and 1,500 CF. If your bill reads "8," it's CCF. If it reads "800," it's CF. Both describe roughly the same amount of water.
Outside the U.S. you'll usually see cubic metres (1 m³ = about 264 gallons) or litres. This calculator accepts all of them and converts everything to gallons per person per day, which is the only figure that lets you compare households of different sizes fairly.
What Counts as Normal
EPA WaterSense puts average American indoor use at roughly 82 gallons per person per day. Once outdoor watering is included the national figure often cited is closer to 100. Both numbers are averages across wildly different climates and lot sizes, so treat them as a reference point rather than a target.
Translated into monthly totals at 82 gallons per person per day:
- 1 person: about 2,460 gal — roughly 3.3 CCF or 329 CF
- 2 people: about 4,920 gal — roughly 6.6 CCF or 658 CF
- 3 people: about 7,380 gal — roughly 9.9 CCF or 987 CF
- 4 people: about 9,840 gal — roughly 13.2 CCF or 1,315 CF
- 5 people: about 12,300 gal — roughly 16.4 CCF or 1,644 CF
Per-person use tends to fall as household size rises, because dishwashers, laundry loads and outdoor watering are shared. A single-person household running slightly above 82 gallons a day is entirely ordinary; a family of five at the same per-person rate is using more than most.
When a High Number Means Something Is Wrong
Above roughly 120 gallons per person per day with no outdoor watering, it's worth investigating rather than assuming your family is just wasteful. The usual causes, in rough order of how often they turn out to be the answer:
- A running toilet. The single most common culprit by a wide margin. A continuously running flapper wastes around 200 gallons a day — about 6,000 gallons on a monthly bill — and it's often silent. Put a few drops of food colouring in the tank, wait 15 minutes without flushing, and check whether colour appears in the bowl.
- Irrigation you've forgotten about. A stuck valve or a controller still running its summer schedule in October can quietly double a bill.
- A dripping faucet or leaking supply line. Individually small, but a drip a second is roughly 3,000 gallons a year.
- A billing period that isn't a month. Two-monthly and quarterly bills routinely get mistaken for monthly ones, making usage look two or three times worse than it is. This calculator asks for the number of days precisely because of that.
- An estimated read. Some bills are estimates rather than actual meter readings, and the correction lands on a later bill as a spike.
The definitive test costs nothing: shut off every fixture and water-using appliance, write down the meter reading, wait two hours using no water at all, and read it again. Any movement means water is going somewhere it shouldn't.
What This Calculator Doesn't Tell You
It benchmarks your volume, not your bill. Two households using identical water can pay very different amounts, because rates vary enormously by city, most utilities use tiered pricing where the rate climbs with consumption, and sewer charges — often calculated from your water usage and frequently larger than the water charge itself — sit on top. Fixed monthly service fees apply regardless of use.
