The short answer: about 328 gallons a day, 9,840 gallons a month, and roughly 119,700 gallons a year for indoor use. On a bill that shows up as around 13 CCF monthly, or about 1,315 cubic feet.

Those figures come from the EPA WaterSense average of roughly 82 gallons per person per day. But an average across every climate and lot size in the country only gets you so far — what most people actually want to know is whether their number is fine. That depends on three things the headline figure ignores.

The Benchmark by Household Size

At 82 gallons per person per day, indoor use only:

One important caveat: per-person use tends to fall as households get larger. Dishwashers, washing machines and outdoor watering are shared, so their volume spreads across more people. Someone living alone often uses noticeably more than 82 gallons a day, while each member of a family of five may use well under it. If you're a one- or two-person household running a bit above the benchmark, that's normal rather than wasteful.

The comparison that actually works: Never compare total gallons between households of different sizes. Divide by people and by days in the billing period, and compare gallons per person per day. That's the only figure that means the same thing in every home.

Reading the Units on Your Bill

This is where most people go wrong before they even get to the comparison. Water utilities bill in units nobody uses in daily life, and the two most common ones look almost identical:

  • CCF (also written HCF) = one hundred cubic feet = about 748 gallons
  • CF = one cubic foot = about 7.48 gallons

They differ by a factor of 100. Mistaking one for the other turns a perfectly normal bill into an apparent disaster, or hides a genuine leak. The quick check: a typical household lands between roughly 3 and 15 CCF a month, or 300 to 1,500 CF. If your bill says "13," it's CCF. If it says "1,300," it's CF. Same water.

Three Things That Legitimately Push You Above Average

Outdoor watering. This is the biggest single swing factor and it's entirely normal. Lawn irrigation can double summer usage. A sprinkler system running an hour uses roughly as much water as a household uses indoors in a day. If your bill spikes every June and settles every October, that's irrigation, not a leak.

Older fixtures. A pre-1994 toilet uses 3.5 gallons per flush against 1.28 for a WaterSense model. Across a family of four flushing five times each daily, that difference alone is roughly 1,300 extra gallons a month. Showerheads and washing machines show similar generational gaps.

Household composition. Teenagers, someone working from home all day, a new baby generating constant laundry, or anyone with a medical condition requiring frequent bathing all raise usage without anything being wrong. Averages assume a household that may not resemble yours.

When It's Actually a Leak

Above roughly 140 gallons per person per day with no outdoor watering — around 17,000 gallons a month for a family of four — a leak becomes more likely than behaviour. The usual suspects:

  • A running toilet is the answer far more often than anything else. Roughly 200 gallons a day, about 6,000 a month, and frequently silent. Test it: a few drops of food colouring in the tank, wait 15 minutes without flushing, and see whether colour reaches the bowl.
  • Irrigation left running — a stuck valve or a controller still on its summer schedule.
  • A dripping faucet. One drip per second is about 3,000 gallons a year. Small individually, but they add up across a house.
  • Underground supply line leaks, which show as high usage with no visible cause and usually need a plumber.

The definitive test is free. Turn off every fixture and water-using appliance, note the meter reading, wait two hours using no water at all, and read it again. Any movement means water is escaping.

Two Things That Aren't What They Look Like

A billing period that isn't a month. Plenty of utilities bill every two months or quarterly. Reading a 60-day total as a monthly figure makes normal usage look twice as bad as it is. Check the service period dates on the bill before panicking — this is a surprisingly common false alarm.

An estimated meter read. Some bills are estimates rather than actual readings, and when the utility eventually takes a real reading, the correction lands as a spike on one bill. If a single month looks wild and the ones either side are fine, check whether it was an estimate.

If Your Usage Is Normal but the Bill Isn't

Volume and cost are separate problems. Rates vary enormously between cities, most utilities use tiered pricing where each additional unit costs more, and sewer charges — often calculated from your water consumption and frequently larger than the water charge itself — sit on top. Fixed service fees apply no matter how little you use.

If your gallons check out but the bill still stings, shorter showers won't fix it. Look at the rate structure, check whether you're being billed for sewer on outdoor water that never enters the sewer (some utilities offer irrigation meters or summer sewer caps for exactly this), and ask about available rate plans.
