What Are Solar Shingles?
Solar shingles (also called solar roof tiles or building-integrated photovoltaics/BIPV) are photovoltaic cells built directly into roofing material, replacing conventional shingles rather than mounting on top of them. Tesla Solar Roof is the best-known product, alongside offerings from GAF Energy and CertainTeed. They generate electricity the same way traditional panels do, but blend into the roofline rather than sitting as visible rectangular panels.
The Cost Gap
Solar shingles typically cost $21–35 per square foot installed versus $12–18 for traditional panels on the same roof — translating to roughly $4–5.50 per watt for shingles compared to $2.50–3.50 per watt for panels. For an average 8kW residential system, that's a $14,000–20,000 premium for shingles, largely from the specialized manufacturing, more complex installation, and the fact that shingle systems typically also replace the entire roof (whereas panels are added to an existing roof).
Why the Roof-Replacement Factor Matters
The cost comparison is fairer when your roof needs replacement anyway. If you need a new roof regardless, solar shingles replace both the roofing material and add solar generation in one project — narrowing the effective premium versus installing traditional panels on top of a newly replaced conventional roof. If your existing roof still has 10+ years of life left, traditional panels are almost always the better financial choice since you avoid paying for roofing you don't yet need.
Efficiency and Output Differences
Traditional panels generally have higher per-square-foot efficiency (18–22% for premium monocrystalline panels) than solar shingles (15–20%), meaning shingles need more roof area to generate the same total output. For roofs with limited south-facing area, this can matter meaningfully in total system capacity.
Aesthetics: The Real Reason to Choose Shingles
The primary reason homeowners choose solar shingles over panels is appearance — shingles look like a normal roof (often indistinguishable from asphalt or slate at a glance), while panels are visibly mounted hardware. In HOA communities or historic districts with strict aesthetic rules, solar shingles are sometimes the only approved option. Warranty and Durability
Both options typically carry 25-year power output warranties. Solar shingles integrate the roofing warranty and solar warranty into one product, which can simplify claims but also means any roofing issue may require specialized (and more expensive) repair technicians rather than a standard roofer.
